International Pronouns Day

International Pronouns Day

International Pronouns Day is dedicated to recognizing the importance of respecting, sharing, and using people’s correct pronouns. Pronouns can be a contentious topic but they are an important part of creating a culture of respect and inclusion. It is not only important for transgender people, but for people who are intersex, gender non-conforming, or simply don’t fulfill a stereotypical gender appearance. Pronoun misuse can be hurtful and invalidating. Beyond that, it is important to be mindful of the stereotypes and gender assumptions our language can reinforce.

There are a number of things you can practice to be more inclusive in general, such as avoiding gendered terms in your language or politely asking about a person’s pronouns when unsure. Avoid assuming a person’s pronouns based on appearances alone. The singular “they/them” pronouns are usually acceptable when referring to a person of unknown gender identification. Mistakes can be easy to make; simply briefly apologize, correct yourself, and move on. And don’t worry, proper pronoun use comes easily with practice.
