Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Today is a special day to commemorate the history and culture of indigenous peoples’. This is a day to challenge the narrative of Columbus Day that falsely purports the discovery of America. This narrative has silenced the realities of colonial violence, land theft, forced assimilation, and cultural erasure. It’s about shifting the focus from a colonial past to a future grounded in respect, sovereignty, and truth. Indigenous communities are not relics of the past; they are vibrant, diverse, and present. With over 574 federally recognized tribes in the U.S. alone, Indigenous peoples continue to lead movements in land stewardship, language revitalization, environmental justice, education, art, and political advocacy. This is a day about confronting the past, listening to Indigenous voices, and supporting the fight for justice.
